Pennsbury Manor was the home of William Penn, a large landholder in Pennsylvania and major force in the Quaker influence of the area. Although Penn was granted his land from the King of England, and was named proprietor of Pennsylvania by the king, Penn acknowledged that the Indians were there first. In an attempt to gain good relations with the Indians he did actually pay the Indians for the land.
